Laminate Furniture

This one is a tricky topic, but you rest assured you CAN paint laminate furniture. The key to a great finished project is proper prep! You should first clean the surface with a damp cloth (or with TSP substitute if there is a grimy film on the surface). Ensure that all dust and cleaning product residue is thoroughly removed before continuing on.

Sand the every surface of the piece surface lightly. If you sand too hard then you could break the surface of the laminate down to the MDF below and that will result in an uneven finished texture. So, go easy on this part and use 150-220 grit sandpaper.

Next you’ll want to prime with a shellac-based primer or one that says on the label that it can be used on shiny or slick surfaces. If you notice bubbling on this step then the primer is not bonding to the laminate.

Now you can roll or brush on your paint color of choice. Again, several light coats are better than fewer heavier coats. For best results you will want to follow with a clear top coat.
