Have you ever thought about where to take your home decor to the point where it almost gave you a headache? I’ll have to admit that I’ve been guilty of it in the past.

Now that I have seen this adorable mermaid girls room that one mom was able to create for around $20, though, I may never stress over it again.

She shared a picture of a turquoise wall that shimmered in the light. It looked just like mermaid scales, and Katie Blackbourne was happy to tell Pretty52 how she did it. The 20-year-old mother from Essex made it look easy.

She posted the DIY project on a popular facebook group, Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK. Needless to say, the followers were amazed by what she was able to do.

In order to create the wall, she grabbed some free wallpaper samples, wallpaper paste and bright paint from local hardware stores.

She loved what she had done but one thing she wasn’t expecting was the attention she got from her efforts.

She said: “This project began with the idea of a green/blue theme”.

“I went to B&M to look for paint and bought Dulux Feature Wall in Proud Peacock for £14.99. I didn’t buy a tester so hoped for the best that it would look as good on the wall as it did on the tin!”

“From there I had no idea what to do next, I just knew I wanted some sparkle. I got some wallpaper samples from B&M and B&Q and took them home to look at with the paint.”

“I genuinely couldn’t decide on one I liked the most so I decided to cut a few bits and place them together. I love collage and mixed media so I was in my creative element. I tried a few different things and the scales just seemed to click!”

When she saw the paper samples coming together, she started to cut them into a scale shape with a cardboard template.

“I used Solvite Wallpaper paste from B&M at £1.99 and began to arrange the scales on the wall,” she said. “I stopped at the point I decided was enough and added a little mirror in from Poundland because I like the idea it broke up the pattern.”
