Sense of Purpose

No one likes to feel bored, or even worse, useless. This is one of the common symptoms of depression – feelings of worthlessness. Having a tactile hobby like knitting or crocheting can help you feel like you have something to do, and that you can contribute. When you start a pattern, you have a tangible goal – to finish the scarf, blanket, etc. Then, when you reach your goal, you feel accomplished. Plus, you can then gift your project and feel good about making someone else feel good!

Similar to a sense of purpose, once you start practicing your new skill, you’ll learn that you can do things you never thought possible! When I first started, all I knew how to crochet was scarves. I made 50 scarves. And then, I did the impossible; I made a hat. It was hideous and misshapen, but I finally understood how it was done. My second hat was a huge improvement. And this year, I finally got good enough to give several hats as Christmas gifts! There is a sense of pride that comes from someone complimenting a scarf or blanket and being able to say, “Thanks, I made that.
