Over 2 Million Pounds Of Chicken Recalled For Containing Metal

The USDA announced on Wednesday, November 6th, that 2.1 million pounds of chicken are being recalled for possibly containing “extraneous materials, specifically metal.” The chicken came from Simmons Prepared Foods, based in Gentry, Arkansas.

Simmons Prepared Foods said the contaminated chicken was sent out to institutions in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Georgia, Minnesota, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania. Places that are potentially impacted by this recall include restaurants, schools, hospitals, and distributors. The official recall states that the poultry products were produced between October 21st and November 4th.

The company released a statement on Wednesday to address the issue. “Food safety is a very serious matter at Simmons. That is why Simmons has issued a precautionary and voluntary recall of approximately 2 million pounds of fresh and frozen chicken products due to the potential to contain extraneous material, specifically metal. We are working closely with regulatory authorities and affected customers to expedite this product recall.”

This is a Class I recall, which indicates a “health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.” However, in their statement on Wednesday, Simmons Prepared Foods said there are no confirmed reports of any adverse reactions to the potentially contaminated chicken.
