Are You Making One Of These Common Interior Design Mistakes?

Check out these tips on styling your space like the pros!

5. Ignoring The Rule Of Thirds

If you’ve ever taken a photography class or an art class, you probably remember the rule of thirds. Basically, it goes something like this: Picture a blank canvas. Draw vertical lines at 1/3 and 2/3 on the canvas. Then, draw horizontal lines at 1/3 and 2/3 down on the canvas. This grid shows you where to place an object so it is more interesting and attention-grabbing. When placed on the lines it’s good, but even better if it can be at the intersections. This can translate to interior design when thinking about the placement of objects. Instead of putting your photo in the middle of the shelf, place it to the left or right third of the shelf.

6. Empty Space Under Console

This may seem nitpicky, but the space under a console or a sofa table or a bench are some of the most undressed areas of the house! By having all of your decor on tables or on walls, and leaving the spaces beneath those tables empty, you’ll give the room a “top heavy” feeling. To fix this you can add some fabric storage bins underneath a bench, or place a stool or some nesting tables under a sofa table. You can add a table under your console with some decor to fill the space.
