Supplies:

First, gather your supplies. Primer, base coat, and sandpaper are the basics for the first step. From there, you have some options. If you want the gray, distressed look used in this example, go ahead and grab some gray craft paint. You can also use a wood stain if you want a more natural look. The most important tool you’ll need to pull off this look is a wood grain tool. This is a special kind of paint roller that has the texture of wood. You can pick one up for pretty cheap at your local home improvement store. To finish things off, get a sealant or a brush on wax.

Prep The Surface

Depending on the surface you’re working with, there are a few different steps you’ll need to take. If the piece is unfinished, you’ll need some primer and a top coat of paint. If the piece you’re working on is already painted, you’ll want to strip that off and sand it down, then apply a base coat of white paint.

Wood Grain Technique

Next paint on a layer of either gray paint mixed with water to thin it down, or wood stain, depending on what look you’re going for. Then, use the wood grain tool to stamp on the wood texture. Grab a dry brush and lightly feather it over the wet paint to add even more texture. Once everything is dry, apply your sealant to finish everything off.
