Some of our favorite classic films weren’t necessarily loved by all.

Author Winston Groom hated the 1994 film adaptation of his novel due to it leaving out plot points and removing some of the edgier language and sexual situations. In fact, when Groom wrote a sequel, it began: “Don’t never let nobody make a movie of your life’s story.” Yikes!

5. Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory

While many might find Willy Wonka a charming and eccentric personality, the reality is that he was a character who lured children to his factory and punished them for their weaknesses. Author Roald Dahl hated that the 1971 film version of his novel “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” wasn’t darker. He took issue with director Mel Stuart and with actor Gene Wilder’s portrayal of Wonka, referring to Wilder’s representation of the character as “pretentious” and “bouncy.”

4. The Shining

Stephen King wasn’t a fan of how director Stanley Kubrick adapted his famous horror novel to film. King insisted that Jack Nicholson, in the lead role as Jack Torrance, appeared crazy from the opening of the movie, and that the film didn’t deliver the character’s progression toward insanity caused by the hotel. King also objected to the helpless portrayal of Torrance’s wife in the motion picture. When the film was remade for television in the 1997, King kept a much closer eye on the production.
