Did You Ever Notice How Weird English Really Is?

The English language is… not easy. There are so many special rules and pronunciations that even native speakers have trouble keeping them all straight (or is it strate?).

The English language is…well, to put it honestly, not really all that easy. There are so many special rules and pronunciations that even native speakers have trouble keeping them all straight (or is it strait?).

It seems there’s no rhyme or reason for many of these rules, although history can sometimes clue us in as to why words with similar spellings are not pronounced the same or pluralized in the same way. For example, the words “moose” and “goose” have entirely different etymological backgrounds and come from different languages that form plurals in different ways. This is why the plural of “goose” is “geese” but the plural of “moose” is not “meese.”

So if you are not a native English speaker, prepare to get potentially very confused. And if you have been speaking English for your whole — well most — of your life, then get ready to have your mind blown by how weird our language really is…and potentially be just as confused as our non-native speakers.
